30+ years of premiere goaltending and hockey experience

Goaltending for a junior, college, or professional hockey team requires more than just on- ice skill. Joe Clark’s one-on-one mentorship program is designed for young athletes who want to advance their hockey career and prepare themselves for the journey ahead. The same can be said for forwards and defensemen trying to reach the next level. While Clark’s focus is on goaltending, he has vast experience mentoring defensemen and forwards.

InsideEdge Goaltending was launched in the May of 2019 by Clark, using his 30+ years of goaltending experience to help his clients refine their skills both on and off the ice. Clark spent the majority of those three decades as a head coach and now works with goalies, forwards and defensemen.

Develop physical and mental skills that will bring your game to the next level

InsideEdge Goaltending is a combination of coaching and consulting that is aimed at the physical and mental development of goaltenders and skaters. Founder Joe Clark has a wealth of experience mentoring NHL, European, NCAA, and junior players over three decades.

Our mentorship provides career skills

IEG clients receive a combination of on-ice sessions (both in-season and off-season) as well as video feedback, guidance on getting to the next level and what it takes to stay there and keep moving ahead. Clark's most prominent tool is his ability to talk to goaltenders and skaters - helping them not only with their mechanics but keeping them mentally balanced and focused.

"The best way to handle players is to tell them the truth," says Clark. "But what you say, how you say it and when you say something are the keys. Sugarcoating things won't help goaltenders, but accountability and maintaining true confidence will."

Being a listener

Joe Clark says there are so many similarities between goaltending and golf. He should know, since he has coached in both sports.

“It has to do with the mental side of the game,” says Clark. “You’re on your own, so your focus and frame of mind better be in a good place. So many times on the golf course you can let negativity creep in, and it won’t be pretty. Same with goaltending.”

So Clark watches. And he watches some more. The best goalie coaches, or at least the ones who have the most impact, spend most of their time observing. Getting to know their clients’ swings, so to speak.

“My philosophy is helping a client become mentally self-reliant,” says Clark. “One of the tools from a coaching standpoint is timing – knowing when to speak and knowing when to observe. When I’m on the ice with clients – whether it be Hellebuyck or James Reimer or Tyler Bost – we always have a plan. We execute that plan, and then it’s time for feedback – whether it be on the ice or on a Zoom call.”

Experience matters

Clark says he created IEG to utilize his experience over the past 30 years, ranging from dealing with athletes at the NHL level, European level and NCAA & junior levels.

“All of these goaltenders and skaters are learning about handling the grind at their level,” says Clark. “I provide them a little insight as to what’s ahead for them, and how to get there. We all have one thing in common – we love the game, we want to advance and we want to be the best of the best.”
